Claire Henderson Davis at her home in Camberwell. Her father Charles Davis, wrote an article for the Observer in 1971 asking: "Was Jesus Married?" Davis had been Britain's leading Roman Catholic theologian, who left the priesthood and church in 1966 and married the following year. By 1971 he was professor of religion at Sir George Williams University in Montreal, and ready to break another taboo. Claire Henderson Davis is a dancer/choreographer, writer and theologian. Her performance work brings together artists from different fields, often involving collaboration between professionals and non-professionals. She is particularly interested in how we inhabit our bodies in the everyday, and her work focuses on developing new forms of participation and audience engagement. Claire is the author of After the Church: Divine Encounter in a Sexual Age (Canterbury Press, 2007), an autobiographical coming to terms with her radical, Roman Catholic upbringing, and a re-imagining of the Christian tradition in contemporary language. At present, Claire is Contemporary Performance Artist & Theologian in Residence at Chester Cathedral (2015-1018).
