Sheila Maurice-Grey
Sheila Maurice-Grey is a London based trumpeter and visual artist. Having take part in the Tomorrow’s Warriors development programme founded by Gary Crosby OBE, Sheila is a core member of upcoming ‘Nérija,’ who were recently nominated for Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the year 2016. Sheila is also bandleader of afrobeat band ‘KOKOROKO,’ and has performed with in KANO’s live band on the ‘Jool’s Holland Show’ and ‘The Mercury Prize.’
Central to Sheila’s art practice, is stimulated by historical and iconic visual references known about the black female body and the notion of ‘blackness’ throughout the 20th/21st century.
Visually she tries to understand how historical facts known about Sarah Baartman (the Hottentot Venus) and The Minstrel Show interplay, as well as operate politically within media and the everyday.
Sheila aims to question what it means to be misrepresented versus what it means to misrepresent.
